App template: Debt/Loan

Lend money without the awkward conversation later.

Lending money to someone you know is usually a handshake and a promise. Months later, the amount, the date or even whether it was a loan at all can become a question. With the Debt/Loan template you write down exactly what was agreed and send it to the other person; once they approve it, both of you hold the same sealed record.

When to use it

  • You lend a friend money for rent, a deposit or a car repair.
  • A family member borrows a larger sum and you agree on a repayment date.
  • You pay for something on behalf of a colleague and agree they will pay you back.
  • You agree on a payment plan for money that is already owed.

What goes on the receipt

Who is taking the debt?
Choose whether you or the other person is the borrower. The receipt names the borrower as the responsible party and the other person as the lender.
Amount and currency
The exact amount lent, in the currency it was lent in.
Repayment date
The date the money is due back. If you agreed on instalments, add each one as its own item.
Payment method
How the money will be returned: bank transfer, cash, or anything else you agreed.

How it works

  1. 01 Tap "New Receipt", pick the template and answer its short questions. SEAL turns your answers into numbered items; add your own items if you need to.
  2. 02 Pair with the other person using a 6-character code (letters and digits, valid for 30 minutes, single use): share an invite link, show the QR code or read the code out.
  3. 03 The other person reviews the receipt on their own phone and approves it or uses "Suggest Edit". Once the final version is approved, the receipt is sealed.
  4. 04 Both of you keep the same sealed record. Its code (SEAL-XXXXXXXX) lets anyone look up its status at getseal.app/verify, and either of you can download it as a PDF.

Tips for a clear receipt

  • Write the amount in the item text as well if you agreed on instalments, so each payment is its own line.
  • Agree on what happens if the date is missed, and add it as an item. It is easier to talk about now than later.
  • If the terms change, create a new receipt: a sealed receipt cannot be edited.

Questions

Is a SEAL receipt the same as a promissory note?

No. A promissory note is a formal instrument with its own legal requirements. A SEAL receipt is a shared record of what you both agreed and the approval that sealed it. It can help as evidence, but for large sums use a formal note, a notary or a qualified e-signature as well.

Does the borrower need to pay for SEAL?

No. Creating a new receipt needs SEAL Plus, but the other person can review, approve, download the PDF and verify the receipt for free.

What if the other person never approves it?

Then the receipt is not sealed. That is the point: a sealed receipt shows that both of you saw the same terms and the other person approved them.
